Colorado’s Thrilling World of Pack Burro Racing
They’re at the gate! BANG! And they’re off! Jumping out into the lead is Buttercup, with Pootwaddle close behind. But watch out, here comes Squeaker, followed by Honkey Donkey. Tinkerbell takes over Pootwaddle and Buttercup falls behind. Coming on strong on the outside is Big Mac with Action Jackson nippin’ at her heels, with Jack Speedy Burro and Donkers lagging behind. But hold on to your horses, folks, ‘cause we’re just getting started, and they have a long haul ahead, a hot 34 miles to go.
Here in Colorado, there’s an exciting series of events that happens every year involving these wiry-haired creatures – The pack burro race series is put on by some of Colorado’s finest burro enthusiast in association with some of most amazing towns in Colorado -Through this groovy group, you can rent a donkey, train with him or her, and show up on race day to run a 4-mile race with your new buddy. Or if you’re feeling frisky, the races go up to a whopping 35-miles. However, you might want to strap a 6-pack to your donkey just in case your ass is being an ass and isn’t as frisky as you that day.
I’ve witnessed a lot of pushin’, pullin’, and draggin’ of the asses at these races, but don’t worry, ‘cause even if you end up bringing up the rear, you still get to walk away with a prize: the prestigious title of “Last Ass.” You also get to take in the beauty of the great locations that these events are held in. Now, if dreams of running with a large furry animal aren’t on your bucket list, you still must witness one of these absolutely fun and outrageous spectacles.
